So planting out in the field has begun for 2021. It was a tough start – or non start until this week due to the drought. The cold weather is alright for our wild flowers after we hardened the plugs off first.
Annuals are going in now, they’re the ones needing to go in first and next will be the biennials and perennials. We’re also planting a few vegetables for seed.
Direct sowing has been delayed slightly, partly due to so much work on, the drought and also the cold. Mark has been readying the Stanhay push seeder for our 20 varieties of flax. This flax seed was originally provided by AFBI and we really pleased to be moving forward to make good on our deal to replace the seed they gave us with new. The varieties are the old industrial ones, so many of us here have roots in the flax industry. We’ll be banking some of the seed and we hope to make it available in the web shop later this year depending on harvest.
Margaret Ritchie and Colin McGrath are coming to visit today, socially distancing in the fresh air, it’s heartening that our leaders take an interest in the importance of the environment and we’re grateful for their interest in us.
Blessed be, hope you’re all well and safe and taking care 🙂
