Common name: Nipplewort. Duilleog Bhríde.

General:
This population originates from Co Down. Irish Grid reference: J594448.
Clusters of small dandelion like yellow flowers on stalks from May to September. Considered a weed it’s really quite pretty when looked at more closely.

Benefits:
Reported to be the larval food plant of Timaspis lampsanae a gall wasp, but the wasp isn’t specifically recorded in Ireland, perhaps overlooked. Seeds are good for small birds.

Habitat:
Road side verges, stony ground.

Sowing guidelines:
Sow from late autumn to early spring in trays or modules, prick out into modules, then plant out when large enough.

Cultural history:
Upper leaves are edible.
